Baseball Split in Battle for 1st Place

Etobicoke, ON – In a tie for 1st Place in the OCAA standings the St. Clair College Men's Baseball team split a doubleheader with Humber College Saturday afternoon at Connorvale Park in Etobicoke.  The Saints won the opening game 3-2 before losing 6-5 in 9 innings in the finale.  The teams had identical 6-2 records coming into the matchup and they exited the day still tied at 7-3 atop the OCAA standings.

In the opening game St. Clair took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but fell behind 2-1 after the second inning.  However, the Saints put up a two runs in the fourth inning and then held on holding Humber scoreless for the remainder of the game.  Miguel Cienfuegos (Laval, QC) took the win for St. Clair working the first 4 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 3 batters.  Michael Beale (Windsor, ON/WF Herman) got the save in relief throwing the final three innings surrendering 2 hits and a walk to go with a strikeout.  Kevin Dion (Newmarket, ON) and Garik Godard (Belle River, ON/Belle River) each had a pair of hits for the Saints with both scoring a run in the win.

In game two Humber scored a single run in four of the first five innings to lead 4-0 entering the 6th inning.  But St. Clair roared back scoring 5 runs in the 6th and took a 1-run lead to the 7th inning. Humber scored the equalizer in the 7th which forced extra innings for the second time this season between the teams which would be settled via International tie-breaker.  Each team worked out of the immediate runner in scoring position before Humber scored in the bottom of the 9th inning on a wild pitch taking the contest 6-5.  Saints starter Micah Harris (Cottam, ON/Essex District) gave up 13 hits over 5 1/3 innings but the comeback took him out of the decision as he gave way Michael Hamlin (Harrow, ON/Essex District) who surrendered 2 runs on 3 walks over 3 innings to accept the loss.  Garik Godard had another good game at the plate with 2 hits and an RBI while Kyle Gagnon (Belle River, ON/St. Anne) had the key hit that scored 2 runs which put the Saints ahead in the 6th inning.

The Saints finish their road trip with a doubleheader Sunday at Durham College in Oshawa at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium.  St. Clair has an exhibition game at Macomb CC in Warren, MI on Wednesday before resuming their league schedule next weekend hosting Seneca College (North York) on Saturday and then finish the home stand with George Brown College (Toronto) on Sunday.
