Cross Country Hosts Successful Opening Meet

Windsor, ON – St. Clair College played host to the first event of the OCAA Cross Country season Saturday at Windsor's Malden Park on a splendid day for running and the Saints Men's team continued their unbeaten streak taking the team title. The Women's team for St. Clair also fared well with a 5th place finish. 10 OCAA teams competed in the Men's race with 9 teams facing off in the Women's race. In total 15 OCAA teams entered runners in the event out of the 19 colleges that support cross country in the province.

The St. Clair Men's team was led by outstanding rookie runner Carter Free (Napanee, ON) who ran away from the competition in a time of 25:42 over the very difficult 8km course. He was followed by a 3rd year Saints runner and 2-time All-Canadian Tyler Jones (Lasalle, ON/Sandwich) who crossed the line in a time of 26:41 in 3rd Place just ahead of fellow St. Clair 3rd year man Rick Nepomuceno (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) in 4th place in a time of 26:56. Other finishers for the Saints Men were Thador Tekhli (18th Place, 29:15), Tyler Tofflemire (24th Place, 29:38) and Justin Folkeringa (43rd Place, 32:13) in a field of 79 runners.

The St. Clair Women's team was led by another rookie runner in Mya Palumbo (Amherstburg, ON/General Amherst) who turned in a 6th Place finish in a time of 26:07 over the 6km course. Natasha Atherton (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) crossed in 23rd Place in 27:41 with fellow freshman Trinity Davis (Windsor, ON/Vincent Massey) coming next for the Lady Saints in 25th Place in a time of 27:46. Hailey Jones (28th Place, 28:01), Jessica Hodgkin (29th Place, 28:02) and Beth Horrobin (35th Place, 29:05) were the other finishers for the St. Clair women in a field of 65 runners.

The St. Clair Cross Country program will next be in action against primarily Ontario Universities on Sep. 21st at the Bill Salter Western International Invitational being held at Thames Valley Golf Course in London.

St. Clair will play host to the OCAA Provincial Championships Oct. 26th at Malden Park.
