Ancaster/Kitchener, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team (2-2) split a weekend road trip losing 65-61 to Redeemer University in Ancaster Friday night but were able to get past Conestoga College by a score of 46-28 in Kitchener Saturday afternoon.
In Friday's loss the Saints played from behind for most of the game aside from a 9-0 run that bridged the first and second quarter allowing them to take a brief 22-18 lead. But St. Clair trailed 18-15 after the opening quarter and 38-32 at the half. A low scoring game overall was helped by only 19 total points by both squads in the third quarter. The Saints made it interesting in the late stages but could come no closer than the final difference.
St. Clair was able to score 17 points off 21 Redeemer turnovers but a decided edge in rebounding (53-29) in favour of the home squad surrendered 16 second chance points. Kaelyn Batten (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) scored 15 points to lead the Saints offensively while Janae Smith (Warren, MI) dropped in 13 points and rookie Peri Colthurst (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph's) chipped in with 12 points off the bench.
Saturday's win over Conestoga was a defensive battle as both teams combined to shoot just 23% from the field. St. Clair was up 17-8 after the opening frame but then held Conestoga to just three points before halftime and were comfortably ahead 27-11 at the intermission. After losing the third quarter 12-8 the Saints put the clamps down again holding the home team to just five points the rest of the way.
St. Clair scored 18 points off 22 Conestoga turnovers and enjoyed a 15-6 advantage in bench production as Batten was the only Saint to reach double figures with 22 points to go with 8 rebounds.
The Saints come next weekend to host Fanshawe College (London) on Saturday with tip time at 1:00pm at the SportsPlex.
