Women’s Basketball Sweep Opening Weekend

Windsor, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball started the year 2-0 in OCAA West Division league play after a 79-62 win over Conestoga College (Kitchener) Saturday afternoon at the SportsPlex. 

The Saints were off and running early shooting over 47% from the field in the first quarter taking a 22-16 lead heading to the second frame.  St. Clair had their best defensive quarter before halftime holding Conestoga to eleven points widening the gap to 43-27 by the break.  The Saints carried that momentum into the third increasing the lead to its largest point at 29 points (56-27) about four minutes after intermission. Conestoga made some inroads the remainder of the third and clawed to within 8 points (66-58) with seven minutes go in the game.  That was as close as they were permitted to get as St. Clair finished the contest with a 13-4 run. 

The teams were statistically evenly matched shooting nearly the same percentage from the field, had a similar output from the free throw line and an identical 36 points in the paint.  But St. Clair had 11 more attempts from the field thanks to a 42-35 rebounding advantage and scored 34 points off 21 Conestoga turnovers. 

Rookie reserve guard Chelsea Crep (Belle River, ON/St. Anne) led all scorers with a breakout 18 points which included five triples for the Saints.  Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON) scored 17 points and distributed 7 assists for St. Clair while teammate Janae Smith (Warren, MI) filled up her box score with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.    

The St. Clair Women have some time off and go on the road for their next two games starting with a matchup in London at Fanshawe College on November 3rd
