Late Rally Propels St. Clair Women’s Basketball to Win

Windsor, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team used a late rally to steal a win over Sheridan College (Brampton, ON) at the SportsPlex Sunday afternoon by a score of 70-64. The win keeps the Saints (6-5) in 4th place and in position to host a playoff crossover matchup with five games remaining on their West Division schedule. 

St. Clair was able to take a modest 24-21 lead after the first quarter and extended it to their largest advantage of the game at 33-21 early in the second frame.  But Sheridan battled back from a 40-34 halftime deficit in the third quarter and only trailed 55-54 entering the fourth.  Sheridan continued their momentum taking their largest lead at 64-57 with 5:45 remaining in the contest.  But the Saints held the visitors scoreless the remainder of the game and reeled off 13 unanswered points to secure the win. 

Sheridan won most statistical categories, but St. Clair was able to force 30 turnovers which produced 27 points.  The Saints were able to overcome Sheridan shooting 36.9% from the field overall including 50% from distance.  St. Clair managed to make 9 triples but had 22 more shot attempts in the game than Sheridan. 

St. Clair's Janae Smith (Warren, MI) led her team with 22 points to go with 5 rebounds and 4 steals in the victory.  Shae-lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) scored 16 points including 5 triples while adding 8 rebounds for the Saints.  Grace Smrke (Sudbury, ON) recorded a double-double for the Saints with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Lauren Overeem (Brantford, ON) didn't need to supply much scoring to help St. Clair but had 10 rebounds and 8 assists for the near double-double. 

Damika Warner (Brampton, ON) had 22 points off the bench to lead Sheridan in a losing effort.

The St. Clair Women get a reprieve and are next in action Feb. 1st when they visit Lambton College (Sarnia).
