Men's Golf Team Wins OCAA Bronze

WINDSOR, Ont. – The St. Clair College men's golf team had a big day on Wednesday in the final round of the OCAA Championships being hosted by St. Clair at Ambassador Golf Club. The Saints came away with a hard earned team OCAA bronze medal.  It is the first golf division I team medal for the men since 2007.

The men had a three day total of 897 to finish 24 strokes ahead of 4th place Georgian. The Saints finished 15 strokes behind the silver medal winning Fanshawe Falcons. The Humber College men won the team gold medals and Championship.

Spencer Higginbottom (Lakeshore; Tecumseh Vista) was the top Saint over three days shooting 8 over 221 finishing in solo 8th place in a field of 49 golfers. Owen Laverty (Whitby; Brookin High) was the next best St. Clair golfer shooting 10 over 223 and in 11th place. Simon Moir (London; St. Thomas Aquinas) was next at 11 over, followed by John Van Bilsen (Glencoe; Glencoe District) at 16 over and Nate Woods (Belleville; East Side Secondary) at 23 over.

Shannon Coffey (Windsor; Brennan) had a great round for the Saints shooting a 2 over 73. Unfortunately for Coffey her big comeback came up one stroke short of an individual bronze medal. She was 10 strokes back heading into the final round. Justine Gorham (Amherstburg; L'Essor) finished in 6th place followed by Megan Schaafsma (Essex; Essex District) in 7th. The Humber women won the women's team competition over St. Clair.

The Saints are coached by head coach Kevin Corriveau and assistant coach Katelin Lawson.

The St. Clair men's team along with Coffey and Gorham have qualified to compete at the 2023 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Golf National Championships presented by PING. The event takes place at the Lorette Golf Club in Quebec City from Oct. 16-20.

The OCAA tournament consisted of three 18-hole rounds. Men's teams consist of four or five golfers, with the top four individual scores of each round contributing to the total team score. Women's teams consist of two or three golfers, with the top two individual scores of each round contributing to their total score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 54 holes win the respective team titles.
