Saints Golf Teams Off to Good Start at Championships

WINDSOR, Ont. – The St. Clair College Golf teams are off to a solid start at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Championships. Unseasonably warm temperatures greeted the 56 student-athletes competing at Ambassador Golf Club on Monday.

The St. Clair men are sitting in bronze medal position after day one but in a very tight battle. Humber and Fanshawe top the first day men's team standings, with the Hawks leading the Falcons by 11 strokes. The Saints had a couple of great rounds by Simon Moir (London; St. Thomas Aquinas) and Owen Laverty (Whitby; Brooklin High) who both shot 3 over par 74 and are tied for 10th place.

Bryden Dilley of the Georgian Grizzlies put the women's field on notice, shooting a one-under 70 to take a two-shot lead into Tuesday's middle round. Justine Gorham (Amherstburg; L'Essor) led the Saints shooting a 9 over 80 followed closely by Shannon Coffey (Windsor; Brennan) who carded an 81.  Humber leads the team standings by 14 strokes over the Saints.

The scheduled 54-hole tournament runs through Wednesday. Golfers represent 10 Ontario college campuses, including Confederation, Durham, Fanshawe, Georgian, Humber, Loyalist, Niagara, St. Clair, St. Lawrence and Sault.

The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds, weather permitting. The men's and women's player posting the lowest gross score through 54 holes will earn their respective individual championship.

Men's teams consist of four or five golfers, with the top four individual scores of each round contributing to the total team score. Women's teams consist of two or three golfers, with the top two individual scores of each round contributing to their total score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 54 holes win the respective team titles.
