Saints Football Grinds Out Win Over Ottawa

Windsor, ON – The Saints came out on top 28-26 over the Ottawa Sooners in an instant classic at Acumen Stadium on Saturday night. Another packed house with over 1,200 Saints Nation faithful saw the Saints move to 6-0 on the season.

The Saints jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a 34-yard field goal by Kicker Preston Knight (Leamington, ON). On the next drive the Sooners drove the length of the field to take a 7-3 lead into the second quarter. A first half that was dominated by both team's defense finally saw some offense from the Saints when QB Matt Guenette (Windsor, ON) hit none other than WR Javier Lewis (Toronto, ON) for a 19-yard touchdown reception giving the Saints a 12-7 lead. A booming 51-yard field goal by the Sooners kicker brought the game within 2. It took only two and a half minutes for the Saints offense to march down the field, when Quarterback Maurice Sodja (Louisville, Kentucky, USA) capped off the drive with the rushing touchdown, giving the Saints the 19-10 lead headed into the half.

The defenses continued to grind and make the offenses work for every inch of forward progress on the field. Two more field goals by the Sooners kicker saw Ottawa within a field goal once again with seconds left in the third quarter. Another long drive for the Saints ended in a rushing touchdown, this time Running Back Boriz Wright (Windsor, ON) found the endzone for the 11-yard run giving the Saints a 26-16 lead going into the fourth quarter. An early safety in the 4th extended the Saints lead by 12 and that was all the scoring for the Saints in the quarter. Another field goal and late touchdown by Ottawa saw the score back within two points at 28-26. A recovered onside kick by the Saints sealed the deal and Saints Nation left knowing the #2 ranked team in Canada survived another big test at Acumen Stadium.

The Saints' were led defensivley by Linebacker Keewone Parker (Lansing, Michigan, USA) who had 5 tackles, 3 assisted tackles, a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Defensive Back Gaddy Kazadi (London, ON) had a big game in his second game for the Saints as he led the team in tackles with 6 solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles and a tackle for loss.

St. Clair Football hits the road next weekend as they travel to Hamilton to take on the Hurricanes at Tim Hortons Field. Kick-off is set for Sunday, October 1st at 5:00pm.
