Saints Football Move to 2-0 with Win Over Hamilton Hurricanes

Windsor, ON – With inclement weather playing a factor Saturday night at Acumen Stadium, the Saints and Hurricanes kicked off after a 30-minute delay in front of 450 dedicated fans. The St. Clair Saints move to 2-0 on the season, as they defeated the Hamilton Hurricanes by a score of 20-6.

The Saints wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as All-Canadian return man Dante Lewis (Windsor, ON) ran back a Hamilton punt for a 62-yard touchdown to give the Saints a 7-0 lead with 10 minutes to go in the first quarter. This lead was then extended to 10-0 when Preston Knight (Leamington, ON) kicked a 21-yard field goal, thanks to good field position due to a Keyon Gratton (Kitchener, ON) blocked punt.

The second quarter was a defensive battle, and the Saints defense was back at it with an interception by Tiaje Holmes (Windsor, ON). This put the Saints in great field position as Preston Knight went 2-2 on field goals in the quarter to put the Saints up 16-0 heading into the half.

As the second half went on, both the Saints and Hurricanes defense began to take over, as both teams traded field position for most of the third quarter. It wasn't until the Hurricanes offense connected on a deep ball that cut the lead to 10 points and snapped a streak of six scoreless quarters by the Saints defense to start the season.

The Saints defense held strong all night as both Tynan Braymiller (Mesa, Arizona, USA) and Octavian Fanea (Windsor, ON) recorded sacks in key moments of the game, which forced Hamilton into taking two safeties to extend the lead back to a two-score game. Braymiller ended the night with 2 tackles, 1 sack and a forced fumble, while Fanea ended with 5 tackles, 2 assisted tackles, and a sack. A Nathaniel Norton (Windsor, ON) interception capped a dominant defensive performance by the Saints once again.

The St. Clair Saints are on the road for their first away game next weekend as they travel to Belleville to take on the Quinte Skyhawks (0-2) on Sunday August 28th at 2:00pm.
