Women’s Basketball Seize 1st Place

Welland, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team (5-0) took sole possession of first place in the OCAA's West Division after a 55-45 win over Niagara College (5-1) in Welland Saturday afternoon.  Niagara was the province's 3rd ranked team and 14th in the nation while holding their opponents to a league best 48.4 points per game.  The Saints are currently ranked 2nd in the OCAA and 8th in Canada.

A very low scoring affair saw Niagara move ahead by as much as 8 points in the early stages and held a 13-10 lead entering the second quarter.  St. Clair responded well in the next frame and by halftime were in front 24-22.  The margin widened to 40-34 heading to the fourth quarter as the Saints continued to apply pressure which allowed their advantage to slowly increase to the final horn.

Neither team converted more than 25% shooting from the field in the game but St. Clair was able to make three more deep balls and were nearly perfect (14 of 15) from the free throw line which accounted for a 5-point difference over Niagara.

St. Clair 4th year guard Logan Kucera (Chatham, ON) scored a game high 22 points and nearly recorded a double-double with 9 rebounds.  Sister Jana Kucera (Chatham, ON) also reached double figures scoring 16 points but contributed 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Niagara's Janee Harrison (St. Catharines, ON) scored 15 points and added 8 rebounds in the loss.

The St. Clair Women finish the weekend road trip with a game at Conestoga College (Kitchener) on Sunday at 1:00pm.
