Saints Rout Rival London in Homecoming Game

Windsor, ON – The St. Clair Saints showed their dominance against rival London Beefeaters Saturday night after defeating the Beefeaters for the second time in two weeks by a score of 53-20 in front of a sold-out crowd at Acumen Stadium.

In a sea of white t-shirts provided by the Saints Student Athletic Association, there was a certain buzz at Acumen Stadium for kickoff. This was quickly quieted when the Saints fumbled the opening kick leading to a London 35-yard field goal to open the scoring. The defence woke up the crowd with a few dominate stops which gave the Saints good field position, leading to an Andrew Brush (Kitchener, ON) touchdown run giving the Saints a 7-3 lead. On the back of another Saints turnover, Beefeater's kicker drilled a 47-yard field goal to make it a one-point game. The Saints defence then forced the Beefeaters to take a safety, which gave the Saints a 9-6 lead to end the first quarter.

Once again, the defence had Saints Nation on their feet when the Beefeaters botched a snap that led to veteran Linebacker Josh Allen (Windsor, ON) scooping up the football for a 50-yard fumble recovery touchdown, giving the Saints a 16-6 lead. Four minutes later, the Saints fumbled a handoff leading to a London fumble recovery touchdown of their own, bringing the score within three. It was smooth sailing for the Saints from there on, as the running game could not be stopped finishing the first half with 186 rushing yards. Running backs Boriz Wright (Windsor, ON) and Jonathan Cartier (Chatham, ON) both added rushing touchdowns in the last two minutes of the quarter giving the Saints a 30-13 lead heading into the break.

The Saints offence started the second half where it left off when Quarterback Andrew Brush connected with Wideout Enzey Youyoute (Mississauga, ON) for a 40-yard touchdown pass and the lead was extended to 37-13. A remarkable performance on the defensive side of the ball by Tynan Braymiller (Mesa, AZ, USA) who capped his night with a memorable touchdown, as Braymiller busted through the London line blocking a punt. As the ball was rolling towards the endzone he scooped up the ball and was quickly tackled, fumbling the ball into the endzone. A mad scramble saw Braymiller finishing the play recovering his own fumble for a touchdown, giving the Saints a 44-13 lead. Braymiller finished the night with 6 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 blocked kick, 2 fumble recoveries and a touchdown.

The lead remained at 31 until London punched in a 13-yard rushing touchdown bringing the score to 44-20 in favour of the Saints. The offence quickly answered thanks to Jonathan Cartier adding his second rushing touchdown of the game as he plunged in the endzone for a 5-yard score, giving the Saints a 51-20 lead heading into the final quarter. The action in the fourth finally slowed down as both teams traded field position for most of the quarter. The only score of the fourth quarter came by the defence once again, who forced London into taking another safety. A final score of 53-20 saw 1500 fans going home happy as the Saints defeated their rivals once again.

The Saints will head out on the road next Sunday as they travel to Ottawa to take on the Sooners at Carleton University. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
